Here is a series of activities, divided by sector, that you can do in Reggio Emilia and its province.

Let's start from history ... Reggio and its museums

The Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia are a system of different museums (Palazzo dei Musei, Museo del Tricolore, Galleria Parmeggiani, Mauriziano, Museo della Ghiara, Museum of the history of Psychiatry), located in old town and in the first outskirt.
All of them have free admission and observe a shorter opening hours during the week.

Palazzo dei Musei, naturalistic collections of zoology

Palazzo dei Musei (Museums Palace), the main museum of the city, is located right next to the Valli Municipal Theater, in one of the main squares of the town.
Inside, you can find the collection of the scientist Lazzaro Spallanzani, the naturalistic collections of zoology (especially the Raimondo Franchetti's collection!), anatomy, ethnography and the portico of Roman marble.
This museum that can be considered the starting points to know the history of Reggio Emilia.

Noteworthy is the famous sperm whale, the icon of the Museum.

Not far from Palazzo dei Musei, you can find the Museum of the Italian flag, born in Reggio Emilia on January 7, 1797.
A visit to the Tricolor Museum is a required stop for those who come to the city.
Children, can prepare their visit with the Tricolor Comics, an illustrated story about the flag.

Parks and free time

One of the most beloved routes by Reggio Emilia citizens is the Caprette Park and the bicycle and pedestrian walk of the Crostolo stream.
A peculiarity of the park is the presence of some Tibetan goats, from which it takes its name, free to wander around the green area.
Mainly visited by children thanks to the presence of animals and several games, the park is also a reference point in the spring-summer time, when some events are organized, as the renowned and crowded Picnic!Festival, the festival dedicated to illustration and comics.

La casa degli Asini

Not far away, in the wonderful landscape of the Rodano Park, is the Asineria didattica-ASINI DI REGGIO EMILIA: the ideal place to become familiar with these animals, take walks and rest in the shade of the grove.

WWF, Oasi di Marmirolo

On the outskirts, in the hamlet of Marmirolo, there is the Oasi WWF Marmirolo, an area of about 10 hectares in which a very high number of birds nest and reproduce.
The WWF oasis of Marmirolo is open from March to June and from September to November on weekends and holidays:
Saturday from 2.00 to 7.00 p.m.
Sunday from 9.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.
The visit lasts about an hour along a circular path around the two ponds.
Stops are inside the three huts for sighting and at the Visitor Center for a brief introduction on the history of the Oasis.
The WWF Section of Reggio Emilia makes telescopes and binoculars available to visitors and schoolchildren.
In the park behind the visitor center, games and naturalistic workshops are held for children.



There are also several activities in the province. The Adventure Parks are worth a tour: Parco Matildico di Montalto (Matildic Park of Montalto), l'Ecoparco (Ecopark) of Vezzano sul Crostolo and Cerwood Park in Cervarezza, attractions of our wonderful Apennines, first of all the unmistakable Pietra di Bismantova (Bismantova Rock), Parco Nazionale Appennino Tosco-Emiliano (Tuscan-Emilia Apennines National Park), Cerreto Laghi area, Castelli Matildici (Matildic Castles), seggiovia di Febbio (Febbio chairlift). In the Po River area it is possible to take trips aboard the Motonave Stradivari (Stradivari motor ship) to discover the Po River.

Food and wine activities

The knowledge of Reggio Emilia also means going and discover how its top product is produced: Parmigiano Reggiano, the king of cheeses.
Visiting a dairy or a farm may be an unforgettable experience for children and adults.

The cheesemakers work the cheese early in the morning, so it is necessary to get up early so as not to miss any single step of cheese processing.

A valid alternative to the dairy is the Fattorie didattiche (educational farms): from the plains to the Apennines, discover the work of the farmer, "guardian" of the environmental variety of the rural area and the production of quality food.

Last, but not least, the list of festivals and events in the town and province: an excellent opportunity to introduce typical products and crafts of the past!

Events for everybody

Among the many activities, the Centre that has focused all its work on children and their potential is worth mentioning: the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre and the educational method known all over the world with the name of Reggio Emilia Approach®.

One Sunday a month from September to May, the Centre is open to children and families, teachers, educators, students and curious people with a kaleidoscope of opportunities including guided tours, workshops, explorations, storytelling, games and fun.

The Castle of Montecchio Emilia is particularly active, with many workshops and playful activities for children.
