Antonio Fontanesi and his heritage. From Pellizza da Volpedo to Burri

On display will be over thirty paintings by Antonio Fontanesi (1818-1882) from important Italian museums and collections. In the Museum Palace, via Spallanzani 1.

April 6 - July 14, 2019

Antonio Fontanesi's paintings will be compared with the production of the artists that the critics have linked to his production, with possible inspiration reasons in the period from the eighties of the XIX century  to the sixties of the XX century.

Documentation of the relations with the symbolist and divisionist culture through works by Vittore Grubicy, Leonardo Bistolfi, Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo and Angelo Morbelli, and also with the works of the twenties by Carlo Carrà, Felice Casorati and Arturo Tosi.

The last section will be dedicated to the interesting critical interpretations of the fifties by Roberto Longhi and Francesco Arcangeli. The latter saw a continuity between the art's modern concept and the great XIX-century tradition, so as to put Fontanesi into the evolution of a naturalism that arrived after World War II until Ennio Morlotti, Mattia Moreni, Pompilio Mandelli and Alberto Burri's material research.
