description

Leaving Reggio Emilia, along the SP28, after a few kilometers, towards Codemondo, you will find on the right a beautiful villa with a large garden and an imposing metal fence: it is Villa Angela formerly of the Counts Cassoli and therefore of the Crovetti family of Sassari. It looks like an elegant nineteenth-century residence surrounded by the park. On the back, not visible from the road is the small oratory dedicated to the SS. Grisante and Daria.
A little further on, almost at the gates of Cavriago, at the roundabout, turning left, you reach the Villa of San Bartolomeo, from where you can see the first spurs of the Matildic hills and where the Modolena stream flows.
Walking, pedaling on the narrow streets of Ghiardo in San Bartolomeo, San Rigo and Codemondo is pleasant and relaxing between the low rows and the patches of bush interspersed with the elongated fields towards the city.
They can also be reached by following the "Reggio Emilia-Codemondo" cycle path which runs alongside the SP28.
Around the ancient church, where the parish center and the sports field are gathered, we find a playground and recent buildings.
The church of San Bartolomeo, restored at the beginning of the 1940s, is characterized by the massive oak door, dating back to the end of the 19th century, designed by Reinaldo Tarasconi di Cavriago; inside there is a seventeenth-century painting, by an unknown author, depicting San Bartolomeo.

From the Reggio Emilia town centre, follow via Emilia all'Angelo, cross the Santo Stefano roundabout, the Crostolo bridge and turn left in Via Giacomo Puccini. On the way you can admire: the Santo Stefano Church (dating back to the XI century, it was one of the properties of the Templar Knights and preserves the most ancient Romanesque finding inside: a capital depicting Jesus, an Angel and a headless female), and the roundabout with the Marco Gerra sculpture, an abstract work of art (10 m high and 90 quintal heavy).

After turning right in Via Vincenzo Gianferrari, you pass under via Chopin and follow the cycle path which passes through the Nilde Iotti Park up to Via dei Templari. The Park marks the south border of two important Reggio Emilia villas: Villa Terrachini (private) and the Maramotti Collection, the first headquarters of the fashion house Max Mara, now turned into a contemporary art "museum" visitable for free.

Go on in Via Gorizia and Via Carlo Teggi, following the Ciclovia 7 of the Reggio Emilia Municipality, and go beyond the beautiful Villa Angela (private property), a IX-century noble residence surrounded by the park and delimited by a huge enclosure. Behind the villa, not visible from the street, is a little oratory dedicated to the Saints Grisante and Daria, protectors of the town.

Near the Codemondo Church, turn left in Via Pantaleone, flank the cemetery and turn right in via Socchi. Go straight in via Pigoni up to Via Teggi. From here go straight to the Cavriago town centre, where is preserved an important bust of Lenin.

After a quick stop, between the Multiplo gardens and Piazza Zanti, take up the route by taking Via Matteotti, go on in Via Paterlini and you arrive near the Pianella Park (shopping mall). Pass under the SP28 (Province Road) and go on along the route up to the SP72 (Province Road): follow Via Nemo Sottili and Via Quaresimo up to the San Bartolomeo town centre. Around the ancient Church, where are the parish centre and the sports ground, are a playground and recent buildings. Go on in Via Adelmo Tirabassi, turn right in Via Giovanardi, turn right in Via Zanichelli, cross the Rio Moreno and go straight on up to the hamlet of Ghiarda. Go on in Via Ghiarda and Via Ruozzi up to the Modolena torrent and the majestic Villa Levi.

The route goes on in the hamlet of Coviolo, following the Modolena Greenway up to Via Gorizia. From here, go straight on up to the Reggio Emilia town centre.
