Historical notes

The fountain dedicated to Abbot Ferrari Bonini was inaugurated on 22nd November 1885, coinciding with the conclusion of the construction works of the aqueduct of Reggio Emilia. Both the fountain and the aqueduct were commissioned by Ulderico Levi, an important politician from Reggio Emilia, who played a leading role in the second half of the XIX century for many initiatives in favor of his city.

The sculptures of the fountain are works of the sculptor of Reggio Emilia, Ilario Bedotti and of his student Guglielmo Fornaciari while the project is by Domenico Lanza, engeneer.
The fountain is composed by a circular basin of 10 meters of diameter and a central rocky island with a second smaller shell-shaped basin on the top. On the very top, the sculpture of Poseidon the ancient god of the sea.
Around the base, three cherubs by Ilario Bedotti represent the Fame, the History and the Gratitude.

The fountain had been dry for a long period, due to problems of water dispersion but in 2018, after a careful restoration work, it was given back to the city.
