Historical notes

It depicts the dying Christ Crucified comforted by the Angel with, at the foot of the cross, Our Lady of Sorrows and the Saints Mary Magdalene, Prospero and St. John the Evangelist. It is situated in the town altar chapel that was built at Reggio Emilia Town Council's expense, whose coat of arms dominates at the top of the altarpiece; in the altarpiece itself, by the sides of the big picture, are two monochrome paintings, depicting the Resurrection and the Ascension, that were reportedly made by Giovanni Savi.
