Historical notes

The Church of San Francesco, with the annexed convent, was built by the wishes of Count Alfonso Gonzaga.
The first stone of the building was laid down by the Bishop of Reggio Emilia, Monsignor Giulio Masetti, on 1 August 1588. Although the church itself was built over a short period of time, the convent was still to be completed by 1645.
The Minims Fathers lived there until 1768 and subsequently moved to Modena.
The church has a liturgical orientation and a tripartite façade, intersected by slender pilaster strips surmounted by small arches, with a rose window above the archivolt portal.
There are several valuable artworks inside the church as well as a wooden choir.
